The founder of the THERAPEDIC® brand, Gerald Gershaw, was an American World War II pilot. Before his military service, he was an orthopedic surgeon with expertise in orthopedic treatment and clinical health research design. He firmly believed that sleep, as an important medical adjunct, could repair various physiological functions of the human body.
During World War II, the founder's fighter plane encountered difficulties, flying low and circling over the vast ocean, heading towards the distance. Suddenly, he saw a blue whale leaping out of the sea, drawing a beautiful arc before plunging back into the water. The spirit of the blue whale—free, tenacious, and ever-renewing—inspired Gerald Gershaw, giving him renewed hope. After the war, seeing his surviving comrades suffering from severe sleep disorders due to physical and psychological trauma, he began to contemplate whether he could do something to alleviate the wounds of war they had endured.
Thus, he transformed his deep care for his comrades into the motivation to create a better life. Drawing on his research of the human skeletal and muscular system and his proficiency with various processing machinery, he persisted for years and finally created a mattress that could help restore physical and mental health, improve sleep disorders, and in 1957, he founded the Therapedic brand in New Jersey, USA. Recalling the moment he saw the blue whale leaping with such vitality, he adopted the blue whale as a brand element, symbolizing "restorative sleep."
